This time: Vanessa Brückner

As a PhD candidate in Martin Schattat‘s group, Vanessa Brückner is working on ways to create genetically modified plants without the need for tissue culture – making the process simpler and more practical. ❓ What motivates you at work?
▪️ I love imaging techniques, making the invisible visible. There’s something
profoundly beautiful, almost artistic, about revealing what the naked eye
cannot see. Fluorescence microscopy especially captivates me,
transforming the microscopic world into a canvas of vibrant colors and
shapes.

❓What skill would you like to improve?
▪️ Learning to say “no” remains an ongoing challenge. When surrounded by
fascinating possibilities and exciting projects, I often find it dicult to
decline opportunities, even when my plate is already full. I’m working on
aligning my time with my curiosity.

❓How do you deal with work stress?
▪️ When I’m stressed from work, you’ll find me doing sports, most likely
climbing in a bouldering gym with friends. Physical activities clear my mind
completely – they’re the perfect counterbalance to intellectual work. Those
moments when I’m focused solely on my body’s movements provide a
mental reset.

❓ Who / What inspires you?

▪️ I draw inspiration from stories from passionate people who are deeply
invested in their interests. Hearing someone speak with so much
enthusiasm and seeing the sparkle in their eyes is incredibly energizing.
Podcasts are a wonderful source for such stories.
