Abstract
In the coming decades the human population will face multiple challenges regarding the food we eat. Establishing healthy diets in the context of population growth and crop resilience to climate change are just two of these challenges. The contribution of agricultural greenhouse gas emissions to climate change also needs to be addressed. The lecture will address the specific issue of global zinc malnutrition and a possible GM solution to this problem that is responsible for >400,000 deaths each year. Zinc is essential not only for humans, but also for plants, and recent advances in our understanding of the role of zinc in plants will additionally be discussed. Finally, dramatic developments in genomics and AI offer possibilities for the rapid exploitation of genetic diversity for the sustainable development of crops. In this context, opportunities from recent work on wheat genomics will be addressed.
